who stole your heart and the key?

In the dark, you taste something sweet and tart on your tongue, almost like apple but not quite: pomegranate juice, out of nowhere. A hint of something metallic accompanies it.

You fall down.

"I'm going to use it to be a hero."

[ Rin shakes her head slightly. ]

There's no such thing as heroes.

"It's okay if you believe that, but--" He turns just a little to give her a bright, sweet smile. "I'm going to become one all the same."

A distant rumbling roar of deep, pained distress echoes throughout the land. It seems to come from both above and below at the same time.

[ Rin snaps her head up, then down. ]

What was that?!

"Huh? What was what?"

That sound. It sounded... painful.

"Are you kidding? There's nothing like that around here."

I don't joke around.

[ She glances around again, looking to see if she can spot the source. ]

Well, if you look up...

An enormous serpentine form arches high over the blasted earth, its rosy-gold scales gleaming. Both ends of it disappear over the horizon; its head and the ends of its tail are nowhere to be seen.

[ She gapes at the dragon. ]

...That's definitely not a seahorse...

No, it is not.

Nearby, the boy keeps tugging at the sword.

It's too bad he can't appreciate it...

[ She shakes her head, then glances back at the boy. ]

Do you want help with that?

"It's fine. I can do this on my own."

That doesn't seem likely, but suit yourself.

[ She looks up at the dragon. ]

Can you hear me?

There's no response from the dragon, and the boy gives her a bit of an odd look before returning to his swordly pursuits.

I didn't think so.

[ She turns back to the boy. ]

Before I go— what's your name?

"It's--" And he hesitates, frowning. In a rather smaller voice, he says, "I don't know. I don't know who I am."

[ Rin's eyes widen slightly and her mouth forms a small "o". ]

You don't remember?

He shakes his head. "I know who I need to be, though. That's enough, of course."

That will have to be enough.

[ She nods at him. ]

I still don't believe in heroes, but you're welcome to try it.

[ And with that, she walks away. Now, a sensible person would walk towards that crack, but Rin has chosen to walk past it and keep going, to see where that takes her. It's a straight line she's going in, though, so if nothing comes of it, she can turn around just fine. ]

The walls of the crack follow her steps for a while, the space within them sinking farther and farther down, until she's walking alongside a steep, sheer cliff, the scent of flowers as well as brimstone coming from it.

Still, you can't seem to actually make much progress in getting somewhere different.

[ Rin glances down at the crack and sighs. ]

This is going nowhere.

[ She turns back around and looks for a point she can safely enter to walk down the crack. ]

Back at the start, it's just barely wide enough for a person to fit through, but it widens up ahead. A dull red glow comes from deep within, as does the scent of brimstone. Right above the crack, a ragged red banner flutters, bearing an indecipherable symbol in gold upon it. That marking is oddly alien in this place.

[ She glances only briefly at the banner before continuing down the crack. ]

You squeeze into the crack. Before you, the ground slopes down...
