There does seem to be a narrow pathway through the ooze where it's fairly shallow, but it grows deeper on either side of that. Also, as you progress forward...things start to emerge from the black sludge.

Limbs. Legs and arms. All of them grasp at you, and they're strangely shapely and attractive.
