In the dark, you taste something sweet and tart on your tongue, almost like apple but not quite: pomegranate juice, out of nowhere. A hint of something metallic accompanies it.

You fall down.

The walls of the crack follow her steps for a while, the space within them sinking farther and farther down, until she's walking alongside a steep, sheer cliff, the scent of flowers as well as brimstone coming from it.

Still, you can't seem to actually make much progress in getting somewhere different.

Well, in that case, the legs and feet are brushing up against you and the hands are grabbing at you. Honestly, some of them are starting to go for uncomfortable places.

They're very attractive disembodied limbs.

[starting to slash, finally, but he's already pretty damned tangled, squirming and uncomfortable.]

[ Rin glances down at the crack and sighs. ]

This is going nowhere.

[ She turns back around and looks for a point she can safely enter to walk down the crack. ]

Back at the start, it's just barely wide enough for a person to fit through, but it widens up ahead. A dull red glow comes from deep within, as does the scent of brimstone. Right above the crack, a ragged red banner flutters, bearing an indecipherable symbol in gold upon it. That marking is oddly alien in this place.

"Are you going to keep going?" She seems to take for granted the answer will be yes, as she holds out one of her swords to you and says, "You should take this to light your way. It gets dark up ahead."

Indeed, the sword's blade is glowing slightly.

[steelmyself]

"Don't worry about it. Maybe you can join us for a bit, some other time. You've got places to go now, right? But I always think he could use more friends."

Sticky black blood, just like the ooze you're standing in, sprays out of the limbs as you slash at them and splashes onto you.

But they do start to retreat after a moment.

He keeps pulling at the sword even as he responds. "I need it to save people. That's obvious, right? Anyway, I made a promise."

[unaffective]

Ah, I do suppose that swords are certainly cooler than any other weapon that you could use to that purpose.

[That's fair. She can't argue it. Swords are cool.]

What did you promise?

[steelmyself]

"I promised to make my father's dream come true."

[unaffective]

[... Grits her teeth. Her tone stays neutral, but she's frowning.]

Is that what you'd like - to exact your father's will? What would you like to do?

[steelmyself]

"What I'd...like to do?" He seems honestly baffled by the question. "Sorry, what are you asking?"

[unaffective]

What are your hobbies? What are your hopes and dreams? Humans require such aspirations, you see - do you have them?

[steelmyself]

He responds promptly. "My dream is to become a superhero who saves everyone."

[Well, she's heard enough.

She sits up and hops down from the rock, giving it a good, long stare - she doesn't spare NPC Shirou a glance. It's just a rock; she could break it with a spell, but when she tries to speak the words she thinks about her supplication, and her mouth feels like it's full of cement.

She doesn't dwell on it, but the pause it gives her makes her realize something.]

- Ah. Sir, you should remove yourself before I break the stone.

[steelmyself]

"Huh? I guess you could do that, but..." For just a moment, he steps back, frowning.

She smiles a little. "Don't get me wrong...it's more of a family dinner. But, maybe sometime you can join us. He likes you."

I don't mean to distract you. Rather, it's possible that I could harm you in the process of breaking the stone - it seems this is of import to you, and I've decided that we're friends. I'd like to protect you if possible.
